Depression likely to bring more rain

Most places in north coastal Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry may receive thundershowers

CHENNAI: A depression over the southwest bay that lay about 400 km east-southeast of Chennai on Wednesday evening is " likely to intensify further and move in a northwesterly direction," a special bulletin issued by S. R. Ramanan, Director of the Area Cyclone Warning Centre in the Regional Meteorological Centre here, said.

Most places in north coastal Tamil Nadu, south coastal Andhra Pradesh and Pondicherry may receive thundershowers on Thursday. Many places in the remaining regions of Tamil Nadu, north coastal Andhra Pradesh and south interior Karnataka are likely to experience rain.

In the last two days, the rain toll has gone up to 16. Three persons died in Salem while Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri accounted for one death each, according to officials.

With flood situation in central parts of the State improving, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa directed the District Collectors to assess the damage to crops, irrigation tanks, river embankments, roads, bridges and other infrastructure.

The Collectors and the departments concerned have been advised to come up with proposals for long-term measures to control floods in the vulnerable areas, a release issued after a review meeting called by the Chief Minister said. They have also been instructed to immediately carry out repairs to roads and culverts to restore traffic.

The release said 45,139 persons had been removed to safer places. One hundred and seventeen relief centres had been opened and 1.18 lakh food packets distributed. About the flood discharge situation, it said at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, about 2.9 lakh cusecs was being realised at the Lower Anicut and discharged downstream. The Cuddalore and Nagapattinam Collectors have been instructed to evacuate people from vulnerable points and organise relief.

From a high of 2.41 lakh cusecs received at the Mettur dam earlier, the inflow dropped to about 95,000 cusecs at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.

The flood discharge in the Cauvery had come down, the release added.
