SRIKAKULAM: The second phase of elections to the 21 Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies (PACS) in Srikakulam division on Wednesday passed off peacefully. In all there are 208 TC (territorial constituency) member posts for which elections were held. According to information reaching the headquarters, 92 per cent of voters participated in the election. The Congress had once again bagged majority seats. It had registered majority in 11 of the 17 PACS for which results were available. A feature of election to the members of PACS in Kotabommali, a stronghold of TDP MP Kinjarapu Yerrannaidu, was that the TDP-supported candidates had won all the 13 TCs and Congress drew a blank. Congress had captured majority of 31 PACS for which election were held on 21.
Minor incidents
Rajahmundry: Except one or two minor incidents in Konaseema area, the second phase of elections for president and vice-presidents for 114 cooperative societies went off peacefully in East Godavari district. In Pallamkurru of Katrevukona mandal, the Mummidivaram MLA, P. Viswaroop, and his men allegedly held one MPP T. Srirammurthy captive for few hours as he was working against the Congress party candidate. No police complaint was lodged in this incident. According to official information, out of 116 societies in Amalapuram, High Court had stayed two society elections. In remaining 114 societies, 77 societies were declared as unanimous and elections to Vaddiparru and Vuppalaguptam elections were stayed by the State Government. Elections were held to 35 societies, out of which candidates with Congress party backing won 22 societies and the TDP won more than ten. VIZIANAGARAM: Polling to 161 TCs in 19 PACS out of 23 in Parvatipuram revenue division was peaceful. Elections to four PACS -- Chintada, Komatipalli, Arikathota and Mosuru - were postponed following instructions from the Government.The revenue division has 48 societies of which 25 PACS were declared unanimous.Meanwhile, the election to L. Kota PACS chairmanship was postponed indefinitely due to groupism in the Congress. The group led by P. Mangapathi Rao, MLA, and the other close to Minister for Marketing B. Satyanarayana are vying for the post. The groups led by the MLA and the Minister won seven TCs and six TCs respectively.
