Rallying to promote communal harmony

Collector's pat for Kadapa's history of religious tolerance

KADAPA: Kadapa Collector G. Asok Kumar flagged off a communal harmony rally at Zion College of Physical Education here. Speaking on the occasion, he said people of the district ensured communal harmony whenever selfish elements tried to arouse communal passions.

Promising to develop the district into a model one, he said 5.60 lakh saplings were planted in 16,000 hectares to promote greenery under `Cool and Cute' programme, he said.

The Mayor P. Ravindranath Reddy said people belonging to all religions took part in various festivals here with a spirit of camaraderie. He wanted all to co-exist as members of a family.

Superintendent of Police Y. Nagi Reddy said development would be hastened if peace prevailed.

The district never witnessed communal riots, he said. Communal amity was long-standing in the district, Joint Collector Kanthilal Dande said.

Religious elders, Ahmed Peer Shahmiriah, Naganjaneya Sarma and Bishop M. Prakash led the rally in which hundreds formed a human chain at Seven Roads junction.

Additional SP M. Lakshmi Reddy, Kadapa DSP M. Ramprasada Rao, Zion College Correspondent K. Rajarathnam Isaac, Sr. Geetha of Om Shanthi also spoke. District Minority Welfare Officer P. Mahabub Khan, municipal corporators and voluntary organisation members also took part.
