KADAPA: CPI will stage padayatras in Kadapa district from November 20 and protest before the District Review Committee meeting on November 11, demanding payment of compensation to groundnut farmers who suffered crop loss.
Extent of loss
Groundnut was badly damaged in 1.48 lakh hectares in Kadapa district due to lack of rainfall in some areas and due to heavy rainfall in others, CPI district secretary G. Obulesu told a press conference here on Friday. In addition, the recent cyclonic rains damaged agricultural crops in about five lakh hectares, he said. The CPI leader demanded compensation of Rs. 2,000 per hectare for groundnut crop loss and extension of cent per cent crop insurance in affected villages. He demanded compensation at prevailing market price. Mr. Obulesu hoped the DRC meeting on November 11 would accord priority to problems farmers had to face due to the torrential rains in the district.
Foundation Day
He accused political leaders from the district of being engrossed with other issues rather than woes of farmers and common people. CPI functionaries would stage padayatras in the district from November 20 to 30. They would also celebrate CPI Foundation Day from December 3 to the year-end, he said. Senior CPI leader K. Linga Murthy and Town Secretary G. Chandra took part.
