Couple moves court against son

S. Ramu

LOOKING FOR HELP: The elderly couple at Peddamadaram village in Nalgonda district.

PEDDAMADARAM (NALGONDA DT): Ill-treated and abandoned by their only son, an elderly couple in this village in Kanagal mandal approached the court demanding maintenance from him. The son failed to comply with the court orders and has been imprisoned for a month.

"We are landlords. But I buy rice from the fair price shop. I gave my son whatever he asked for. But he left us in the twilight of our lives," said 75-year-old Pindi Lakshmamma.

Threat on life too

She alleged that that her son, Pindi Sudhakar Reddy, made an attempt on her 80-year-old husband, Shankar Reddy's life for a petty reason one year ago.

"We distributed our land between our son and daughter (Ramulamma). After giving away 21 acres each, we kept 20 kuntas for ourselves. It would be ultimately inherited by my son," Mr. Shankar Reddy said. He told the court that his son had "illegally occupied" the small patch and did not allow him to graze sheep in it.

"When I took my sheep to the fields, he attacked me with an axe. I had a miraculous escape," he said adding that the attack had incapacitated his left hand.

Lakshmamma added, "He never treated me as a mother. He prevented us from constructing a house," Unable to bear the humiliation, the couple filed a case in the special mobile court on January 25, 2005 under Section 125 of the CrPC.

Court ruling

They requested the court to direct their son to pay 1,000 each every month as maintenance. In its interim order on May 16, the court directed Sudhakar Reddy to pay Rs.600 each but he failed to do so, the couple's advocate, Tummala Madhusudan Reddy, said.

"Since he failed to follow the directives, the magistrate sentenced one month imprisonment. The trial will continue," he added. Sudhakar Reddy is in Nalgonda jail now.
