Praiseworthy

The Andhra Pradesh High Court's quashing of the ordinance providing 5 per cent reservation for Muslims in education and public employment is praiseworthy. It is unfortunate that the Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy Government continues to think of religion-based reservation despite being ticked off twice by the court on the issue. Reservation based on religion is a total negation of the concept of equality before the law.

Avuthu Srihari,
Secunderabad, A.P.

I fully agree with the Court describing the manner in which reservation was implemented as "a crude camouflage aimed at shielding what is clearly a naked and exclusively religion-based programme."

The Court's verdict is a welcome one. The State Government should desist from practising such divisive politics.

The Court's decision may be legally valid but the fact is that a community that constitutes 18 per cent of the country's population and a large number of whose members remain educationally, socially, and economically backward needs a way out. The responsibility of helping out, in a civilised society, rests with the majority community.
