Calls for movement to resist commercialisation

  • Government accused of starving educational institutions of funds
  • Permitting foreign universities not in the interest of native ones
  • Unbridled sanction of technical institutions proving unproductive

KADAPA: AISF national vice-president G. Easwaraiah on Wednesday demanded that the Government guarantee education and employment to the student community.

Addressing a seminar on "Problems in education sector - Governments' attitude" as part of AISF town mahasabha here, Mr. Easwaraiah charged the Governments with starving Government educational institutions of funds in a bid to wind them up.

He called for a movement to resist commercialisation of education from primary to higher education stages.

    Semester system

The Government proposed introduction of semester system in a bid to extend degree course to a four-year one, he alleged. The impracticable proposal was given up in the past, but attempts were being made to reintroduce it, he said.

Unbridled sanction of technical institutions was churning out some 50,000 unemployed graduates every year, Mr. Easwaraiah alleged.

Permitting entry of foreign universities into the country would lead to closure of native universities, he feared.

Alien culture and traditions were spreading at an alarming rate threatening Indian culture and values, he alleged. He flayed the Government for not filling teacher posts.

Director of Pushpagiri Educational institutions M. Vivekananda Reddy alleged that the Government facilities to students were inadequate. He charged the Government with neglecting employment generation for educated sections.

    Scholarships

The Government was depriving poor students of education by non-sanction of scholarships in time, CPI town secretary G. Chandra alleged.

The Government was plotting for phased withdrawal of concessions and facilities to students, he alleged.

AISF district president N. Narasimhulu, vice-presidents - Mallikarjuna Reddy and D. Mahesh - and joint secretary N. Venkatasiva also took part.
