ADILABAD: Cotton purchase operations at Adilabad once again suffered on Wednesday with farmers protesting against the alleged discrepancies in weighing at a private ginning factory and Markfed yard. Agitating farmers stopped purchase operations twice during the day and relented only after they were offered compensation. The problem started late on Tuesday night when it was noticed that the weighing scales at a private ginning factory were showing less quantity than the actual weight. The farmers whose produce was already weighed at these scales demanded compensation. On Wednesday the farmers forced closure of the purchase operations and staged rasta roko. Joint Collector A. Dinakar Babu thrashed out the issue by ordering recompense of 15 kg weight to every quintal weighed at the faulty scale. No sooner had the purchase operations resumed than farmers whose carts were being weighed at the Markfed yard scales reported similar discrepancy. They staged an impromptu rasta roko and relented only after being assured of similar recompense. The Agriculture Market Committee had allowed cotton to be weighed on Tuesday at the private ginning factory considering the delayed in start of purchase operations.
