BANGALORE: The Commercial Vehicles Business Unit (CVBU) of Tata Motors has bagged the CII-Exim Bank award for Business Excellence 2005, announced on Thursday at the 13th Quality Summit organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). Having bagged the award, Tata Motors has joined the elite group of higher performance organisations. The earlier winners have been Hewlett Packard India, Tata Steel, Maruti Udyog and Infosys Technologies. The high standards set for the award is seen from the fact that in the last 12 years, there have been only four winners and Infosys was the last to win in 2002. Tata Motors bagged the award for adopting a "Business Excellence framework" as a long-term strategy to drive improvements throughout the organisation. Announcing the award, S. K. Kakkar, Principal Counsellor and Head-CII Institute of Quality, said 52 companies were shortlisted for site visits and the companies were in various sectors, both large and SMEs (small and medium enterprises). The award will be presented at a separate ceremony to be held soon. The CII also announced other awards: "Strong Commitment to Excel" and "Significant Achievement". The winners of the "Significant Achievement" awards are: Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (Haridwar and Tiruchirappalli units), Jay Bharat Maruti, New Delhi, JSW Steel, Bellary, Larsen & Toubro, ECC Division, Chennai, and the National Capital Power Station, Dadri, NTPC. There are 32 winners of the "Strong Commitment to Excel" award and they are: five units of Bharat Electronics; three units of BHEL; six units of NTPC; three units of Murugappa group; four units of Tata group; three units of Aditya Birla group, including two overseas units; Honeywell Technologies; Philips Software; Bharti Tele-Ventures; Kirloskar Copeland; Pata Unit of GAIL; Hazira division of Reliance and two units of Hindustan Coca Cola. Speaking on the sidelines of the summit, R. Seshasayee, Managing Director, Ashok Leyland (who is the Vice President of CII), said the CII had an ambitious programme to cover 1,000 units in three years. It has embarked upon a cluster approach to bring about quality in industries. The programme would be directed at SMEs. Another approach would be associating with Shoji Shibu, a Japanese quality expert and former Professor of Sloan School of Management, to provide inputs to companies on "breakthrough management."
