Massive anti-Polavaram rally by tribals in Khammam

Staff Reporter

KHAMMAM: A massive protest rally was organised by tribals facing the risk of submersion by the Polavaram project in Khammam on Monday. Led by CPI(M) leaders, the rallyists squatted in front of the Collectorate from 8 am to 12 noon and prevented officials from attending to their duties.

The area echoed to the anti-Polavaram slogans as the tribals decried the move to go ahead with the project plan at the cost of their habitations.

Bhadrachalam MP Midium Babu Rao, Bhadrachalam MLA Sunnam Rajaiah and a host of CPI(M) leaders joined the tribals in the protest. They blocked both the gates of the Collectorate. The vehicular traffic on the main road was also disrupted for nearly four hours.

The tribal made it clear that the project works would be stalled at any cost if the government wanted to go ahead with the implementation of the plans without paying heed to their pleas. Tribals from affected mandals of Cinoor, V.R. Puram, Kunavaram and Velepadu were mobilised.
