Congress, TDP trade corruption charges in Rajahmundry

  • Congress accused of discontinuing old-age pensions approved by previous Government
  • Congress leaders seek detailed enquiry into all subjects from the date of first council meeting

Rajahmundry: Lot of noisy scenes and walkouts were witnessed during the Rajahmundry Municipal Council meet here on Wednesday. At one stage all the 13 members of TDP rushed to the podium of the Mayor and staged sit-in dharna for few minutes. When the council met in the morning, the TDP members alleged that their Government had in the past released one month old-age pension of Rs. 2.50 lakhs to 1,409 beneficiaries, which was now stopped by the Congress Government.

    TDP walkout

    V. Srinivasa Rao and K. Appalaswamy of the TDP demanded a resolution on this subject and when the Mayor did not allow the discussion, all the TDP members except the Deputy Mayor Grandhi Lalitha walked out of the council meeting.

After the TDP members' walkout, S. Sivarama Subrahmanyam, Congress floor leader K. Sesaiah and Prasdula Harnath demanded a detailed enquiry into all the subjects from the date of first council meeting. The meeting passed a resolution, requesting the Government to extend the purview of enquiry by the Joint Collector, who is conducting enquiry.

The Congress member Allu Babi made serious corruption allegations against the Mayor. There was pandemonium as the ruling and opposition members had a verbal battle for almost 30 minutes on the corruption allegations.

The TDP members again came back to their seats and made a fresh demand about auctioning Sulabh complexes' maintenance. The Congress objected to the proposal and sought voting on the subject. The proposal was vetoed, as the TDP was not having strength in the council.
