Saibaba fete: rain plays spoilsport

Staff Reporter

Few members of cricket team present at celebrations

PUTTAPARTHI: The spirit of the 80th birthday celebrations of Sathya Saibaba here on Wednesday was dampened by the intermittent rain from Tuesday afternoon. Devotees and visitors were put to a lot of inconvenience with the rainwater flowing through every street in the spiritual town due to lack of sanitation infrastructure.

RTC officials also played their role in causing inconvenience to the visitors by dropping those reaching the spiritual town by their buses outside the town. They failed to make any arrangement to carry the passengers to the bus station in the town, in spite of charging them for the distance up to Prashanti Nilayam. Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Vilasrao Deshmukh, Governor of Andhra Pradesh, Sushil Kumar Shinde, Governor of Karnataka, T.N. Chaturvedi, and Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil, were among a few those who could make it to the occasion.

TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu arrived after the discourse of Saibaba.

Surprise visitors

The surprise visitors on the occasion, however, were a few members and former members of the Indian cricket team, including the star batsman Sachin Tendulkar. V.V.S. Laxman, Murali Kaarthick, Yuvraj Singh, Sreeshanth, R.P.Singh and Olympic shooter R.S. Rathore were also present. Cricket lovers in the gathering watched curiously when Saibaba called Tendulkar near him several times.
