KHAMMAM: Pristine forests under the river systems of Godavari and Sabari will be severely affected by the submergence of the Polavaram project. A few patches of natural forests, which developed freely without human intervention are also facing the risk of submersion. Forest cover spread over 2,271 hectares in Bhadrachalam (south) forest division and 532 hectares in Palvancha division would go under water once the project came up. Some very old forest growth with varied age structure would be affected in Bhadrachalam (north) division. Plantations raised by the Forest Department on the river side would bear the brunt of the environmental impact of the project.
