BANGALORE: The Army Service Corps (ASC), one of the oldest wings of the Indian Army, will celebrate its 245th anniversary on Thursday at the ASC Training Centre and College here. The day will also be celebrated as the 8th reunion of corps. The reunion is held once in five years.

This will be a memorable occasion for both present as well as former ASC personnel, said Brigadier P.R.N. Mohan, who is in charge of training operations at the ASC Centre and College.

"Former personnel, including Major Philip Malins and Major John Downie, who served in the British Royal Army Service Corps, will take part in the celebrations. They will interact with the present personnel and get a feel of the changing role of the ASC Centre," he told presspersons here on Friday.

The ASC, which was formed by amalgamating the Commissariat departments of Bombay, Madras and Calcutta presidencies in 1760, has become a multifaceted organisation of the Indian Army. It is involved in providing supplies, fuel, ordnance and stores. It has moved on from a force providing supplies on the backs of animals to a highly professional organisation with the nation's largest organised transport fleet ranging from motorcycles to tank transporters.

The ASC Centre is also a training ground for army personnel participating in national and international equestrian championships. "Our men are now being trained for the upcoming Asian Games," said Lieutenant Colonel H.R. Sunil, who is the trainer at the Animal Transport Company of the ASC Centre.
