Bangalore: Around 100 artisans from the tsunami-affected areas from Tamil Nadu have put on display artefacts such as decorative tableware, garden ware, metal crafts, furniture and fittings, iron craft, glassware, paper mache, musical instruments, cane and bamboo products, thanks to the efforts of Development Commissioner (Handicrafts). The exhibition and sale, which is on at the Government Fort Boys Pre-University College grounds, is a special effort on the part of the Commissioner, who is trying to provide marketing support to the artisans of the tsunami-affected areas. The Government of India is bearing the travel expenses of the participating artisans, besides providing them free stalls. The artefacts are being sold directly from the artisans to the customers. The "Crafts Bazaar" has been organised by the Small Industries Product Promotion Organisation (SIPPO), Madurai. The commissioner has set up 30 training centres for artistic weaving, textile printing, dyeing, cane and bamboo, paper mache, jute, terracotta, palm leaf crafts for the tsunami-affected people. According to Managing Director of SIPPO S. Rajagopal, the artisans have been helped in skill upgradation, marketing support and implementing insurance schemes. He said the richness of Indian heritage can be seen from the handicrafts on display. Over five million people are engaged in manufacturing artefacts in various mediums, he said.
