Make it a Karnatakada Habba, says writers

Staff Reporter

`Artists from all over the State should be involved in the event'

BANGALORE: If it was a demand for prominence to Kannada last year, it was an appeal for improvising `Bangalore Habba' into `Karnatakada Habba' this year.

At the inauguration of `Bangalore Habba 2005,' which started off with a bang on Friday, President of the Karnataka Sahitya Parishat Chandrashekar Patil and veteran journalist Patil Puttappa called upon the organisers, the Artists Foundation for the Arts (AFFA), to ensure that folk art and artistes from all over Karnataka get a chance to display their talents in the capital of the State.

"Artists from all over Karnataka should be involved in this gala event. The Bangalore Habba should not be limited to the city alone. It is good that you have involved artistes from Dharwad, Mangalore, Tumkur, Chikmagalur and Mysore this time. We hope you will cover all the districts from next year," Mr. Chandreshekar Patil said.

He pointed out that the organisers had ensured that Kannada had got prominence in the event this time. "We are glad that Kannada and Karnataka's culture has been depicted in the publicity material and even on the stage," he said.

Finance and Industry Minister P.G.R. Sindhia, who wished the organisers success in their endeavour, also wanted them to make the habba become popular all over the State. Pointing out that the organisers had not sought any financial assistance from the State Government, Mr. Sindhia said: "when they invited me for the function I was scared they will appeal for funds from the Government. But they clarified they only wanted me to attend the function."

In his address, Mr. Puttappa pointed out that his repeated pleas to the Government to honour a staunch Kannadiga Gopal Sastry, who had migrated from Nanjangud to Gaya in Bihar several years ago were in vain. "Mr. Sastry has not forgotten Kannada and every member in his family, including the daughters-in-law who hail from other States, speak the language even now. Such persons should be honoured with the Rajyotsava award," he said and wondered when the Government would realise it.

Earlier, Ms. Alva welcomed the gathering and Ms. Padmini Ravi proposed a vote of thanks. Actress B. Saroja Devi and Chairman of Karnataka Nataka Academy Srinivas G. Kappanna also spoke.
