CHENNAI: The Madras High Court, which stayed the demolition of some buildings on the Dr. MGR Research and Educational Institute (Deemed University) premises on December 10, vacated the stay on Tuesday. The institution gets 24 hours to remove its belongings from the buildings. Dismissing a writ miscellaneous petition from the university, a Division Bench comprising Justice P. Sathasivam and Justice Chitra Venkataraman said the civic authorities were entitled to demolish the buildings. Pointing out that the district administration and the Ambattur Municipality sent three notices to the petitioner, the judges said the notices were not under challenge. They also recorded Advocate-General N.R. Chandran's statement that the Government was determined to remove all encroachments along the river. The Government on Tuesday provided temporary accommodation to 650 students of Dr.M.G.R.Engineering College and Thai Mookambigai Dental College. An official release here said that 250 TNHB flats in Mogappair would be temporarily allotted to the students, including 350 girls, on Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's instructions.
