MAHABUBNAGAR: The Congress retained with ease the Makthal Assembly seat in the byelection caused by the gunning down of party's senior MLA C. Narsi Reddy along with ten others by Maoists on Independence Day this year. His eldest son and Congress candidate C. Ram Mohan Reddy had a virtual cakewalk by winning the seat with a huge margin of 40,079 votes. This was largely facilitated by the absence of an Opposition candidate with all major political parties, including the Telugu Desam, the TRS, the BJP and the Left, agreeing not to field their nominees in keeping with a precedent earlier to leave such seats to the kin of slain MLAs. As a result, the election was devoid of any political significance. However, smaller parties like the BSP and the Backward Classes United Front fielded candidates who lost their deposits. Mr. Ram Mohan Reddy secured 64,878 votes while Sugappa polled 24,799. The BSP nominee was way behind with 2,866 votes.
