Soulful music for a cause

Contributions from around 650 software engineers keep Sneham going Close to half of the proceeds from the sale of the album will go to Sneham Foundation

CHENNAI: Here's more chicken soup for the soul. A group of socially conscious young people have come together to produce soulful music for a cause.

Sneham Social Welfare Foundation was started in 1998 when a group of software professionals with a social conscience came together. Today, it is a registered trust that raises funds to meet the requirements of children in 12 orphan homes.

Sixty-five volunteers visit these homes at the weekend, spend time with children, assist them in their studies and involve themselves in activities depending on the needs of the home.

Monetary support

This year, 73 students received monetary support toward education and 19 individual requests, mostly for heart surgeries, were fulfilled. Monthly contributions from around 650 software engineers keep Sneham going.

Hopeful of doing more, the Aatmaa band, which has done professional shows in various languages, brought out `Soulfull.'

Ready market

``In some ways we had a ready market among the professionals involved in Sneham. We sold 600 copies in five days,'' said Megh Kalyanasundaram, who has written most of the songs for the album.

`Soulfull' was an idea born in June this year. The album — writing, recording and production — was completed in two-and-a-half months.

It was released on September 13 as part of Sneham Day celebrations.

It was a low cost production — 2000 copies of a compact disc with six soulful indie-pop tracks, complete with soft cover, were produced with Rs.30,000.

Close to half of the proceeds from the sale of the album will go to Sneham Foundation.
