CHENNAI: Tiger conservationist Valmik Thapar will be in Chennai this Saturday for the release of his books "Tiger - The Ultimate Guide" and "The Last Tiger - Struggling for Survival".

S.P. Thyagarajan, Vice-Chancellor, Madras University, will launch the books at the British Council at 6.30 p.m. The launch will be followed by a screening of "Tiger Zero," a tele-documentary presented by Mr. Thapar.

In a press release, Manzar Khan, managing director, Oxford University, has said the books come at a critical time for tigers. "We are holding multi-city launches in Chennai, Delhi, and Mumbai in the hope that we will be able to increase awareness around the world so that more people can engage in the battle to save India's national animal."

"Tiger - The Ultimate Guide" features more than 200 photographs of tigers in the wild by renowned wildlife photographers.

"The Last Tiger - Struggling for Survival" is the story of the crisis facing the animals. The book comes close on the heels of reports about the extinction of local tiger population at Sariska Tiger Reserve and smaller sanctuaries like Palpurkuno and Rani Durgawati, and the submission of the report of the Tiger Task Force constituted by the Prime Minister.

The highlights of the books are the passionate first-person narrative by Mr. Thapar, who has spent nearly 30 years observing tigers in the wild, supplemented by the latest scientific findings and essays by experts on tiger conservation.

Mr. Thapar is a member of the Central Empowered Committee, set up by the Supreme Court of India to monitor forests and wildlife.
