Party in its memorandum to Prime Minister apprehends threat to tribals

NEW DELHI : The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Friday urged the Centre to intervene and ask the Andhra Pradesh Government to stop the construction activity of Indira Sagar (Polavaram) multi-purpose irrigation project stating it would jeopardise interests of tribals.

"The proposed construction would seriously jeopardise the interests of tribals and deprive the livelihood of two lakh people in 276 villages of three districts of Andhra Pradesh," the party delegation said in its memorandum to the Prime Minister.

They said the State Government was proceeding with the project construction with the present design in contravention of the provisions of the Constitution and in deviation of other statutory stipulations and conditions. They said the State Government also ignored the widespread protests from many sections of society and going ahead without obtaining the necessary statutory permissions.

Charge against State

The delegation said the State Government had not given any proper response though the party represented the issues.

"The project would be a man-made devastation for tribal people. With the unmindful construction of the project, people who are living in the contiguous areas for centuries together would become homeless and landless. Our demand is that it should be done without disturbing the livelihood of tribals.

Stating that they had no other alternative but to come to Delhi, the delegation said the Centre should prevail upon the State Government to prepare an alternative plan which does not submerge the scheduled areas and until then ask Andhra Pradesh Government to stop the construction activity.

The delegation included party MPs -- Sitaram Yechury, Penumalli Madhu, Mediam Baburao, AP State Committee secretary, B.V. Raghavulu, party MLA Tammineni Veerabhadram and its Central Secretariat member V. Srinivasa Rao.
