HYDERABAD: A city-based farmer Chinthala Venkat Reddy set a record when his innovative model of improving soil fertility without use of fertiliser was recognised by the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WITO). The PCT recognition will enable Mr. Reddy to file a patent for the technique in countries, which are members of the WITO. The recognition was announced by the WITO in its latest gazette issued on Thursday. Mr. Reddy's invention is to excavate soil from a depth in the agricultural field and spreading it across the field after scraping away the topsoil, to tackle the problem of `depleted soil,' a perennial problem faced by the farmers in the country. Using his innovative technique, he got a record yield of 10.31 tonne per hectare of paddy (BPT5204 variety) and 5.60 tonne per hectare of wheat (Lok 1 variety). The average paddy yield per hectare is around six tonne and wheat around 3 tonnes. The highest yields were recorded and certified by the scientists of Central Research Institute for Dryland Agriculture and Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University.
