What is barred to them

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Non Resident Indians who are granted the Overseas Citizen of India status cannot compete for public office and invest in agricultural land or plantations.

This was made clear by S. Krishna Kumar, Secretary, Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs, during a press briefing by Minister Oscar Fernandes here on Saturday. Replying to a question, he said NRIs could not become MLAs or MPs or members of the judiciary.

Mr. Fernandes said that so far, 8,000 applications of the anticipated 50,000 were received for granting OCI status to Indians living abroad.
