Another case against DMK chief
Staff Reporter
CHENNAI:
The Chennai police on Saturday registered a case against DMK president M. Karunanidhi on charges that he hurt the sentiments of Hindus while addressing a rally three years ago. Police sources said the Madras High Court had directed the Mambalam police to register the case and dispose it on merit based on a public interest litigation.
B.R. Gautaman, director of the Vedic Sciences Research Institute based in Valasarawakkam, had moved the court in October 2002 stating that Mr. Karunanidhi had hurt the sentiments of Hindus. Sources said the case had been registered under Sections 295 A (deliberate act intended to outrage religious feeling) and 298 (Insulting religious sentiments by speech) of the Indian Penal Code.
This is the second police case against the DMK chief this week. Earlier, the State Crime Branch filed a criminal complaint against Mr. Karunanidhi over alleged irregularities in the construction of the Amaravathi bridge in Karur.
