TIRUCHI : To pep up rural economy, the panchayat-level Federation of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) at Kanganipatti is driven by the idea of operating a mini-bus on its own. Urging the district administration to construct a bridge across the Ayyaru rivulet linking the village and Thuraiyur, the federation, secure with a savings of Rs. 3 lakhs generated by its cluster of 13 SHGs, including a few men SHGs, hopes that a positive gesture by the district administration will pave way for vibrancy in rural economy in Thuraiyur region. The federation desires to have an easy access to Tirumanur, Thuraiyur, and Thathaiengarpet, to transport agricultural produce from Kanganipatti and surrounding villages. The federation is expecting a prompt response from the District Rural Development Agency. According to N. Selvam, team Leader of `Gramalaya', an NGO, which floated 11 out of the 13 SHGs in the federation, six members of men SHGs possess heavy vehicle driving licence. The bridge, pointed out Mr. Selvam, would provide a direct link to Thathaengarpettai, the nearest hub of trade and commerce for all agriculturists of the area, sparing the villagers the trouble of taking a detour via Thuraiyur. It would also provide a link between Tirumanur and Thuraiyur. When the SHGs presented their case to the DRDA Project Officer, M. Manohara Singh, during his visit to the village recently, the official released revolving funds to five SHGs on the spot, assuring that he would take up the case with the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development.
