Myth, magic and matinee idol

Symbolism had always played an inalienable part in Tamil Nadu politics.

The latest entrant to the political field, cine actor, Vijaykanth, is no exception.

Cadres of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam painted the city red with posters and hoardings in the wake of the actor's visit to Tiruchi this weekend.

The hoardings depicted Vijaykanth in different `avatars' and the one that stood out was a hoarding put up near the Puthur Four Road Junction by the party cadres.

Though the party has chosen to tread the Dravidian path, the cadres did not have any hesitation in pulling out a scene from the famous Hindu epic, Mahabharatha, to send a message to the public.

Vijaykanth was depicted as Arjuna while the local office-bearer, who had obviously sponsored the hoarding, had himself portrayed as the charioteer (which is none other than Lord Krishna in the epic).

The city residents could look forward to more such "symbolic novelties" as the election turf hots up.
