Talukdar is champion

KOLKATA: Defending men's recurve individual champion Jayanta Talukdar of Jharkhand retained the title for the second successive year but the ladies final threw up a new champion in Manipur's Laishram Bombayla Devi on the penultimate day of the four-day 26th senior National FITA archery championship at the SAI, Eastern Centre, here on Wednesday.

Bombayla's victory is the first for the North Eastern state in the senior section.

Jayantilal Nanoma of Rajasthan won the men's compound title beating Service's Santosh Tamang in a cliff-hanger after both tied 110 after 12 arrows. In the one arrow shoot-off, Nanoma hit a 9 as against Tamang's 8 to take the crown. Manjudha Soy of Jharkhand took the women's title out-scoring statemate Renu Munda by 116 to 104.

Players like Dola Banerjee, Tarundeep Rai, Rahul Banerjee, Jhanu Hansadh and Naresh Damor lost before the title round.

Santosh Tamang rewrote Vivek Kumar's (Jharkhand) record of 113 with an effort of 117 out of 120 points in the quarterfinals. The other record was set in the distaff side where the ultimate winner Manjudha eclipsed Jhanu's last year score of 116 with 117 scored in the semifinals.

Bombayla Devi (Mani) 111 bt Sumangla Sharma (UP) 99. Third place: Sushma 102 (UP) bt Punya Prabha (UP) 100. Semifinals: Sumangla 101 bt Punya 99; Bombayla 103 bt Sushma 99.

Compound: Men: Final: Jayantilal Nanoma (Raj) 110 (9) bt Santosh Tamang (SCB) 110 (8). Third place: Naresh Damor (ITB) 105 bt Sanand Mitra (IR) 103. Semifinals: Nanoma 106 bt Damor 110; Tamang 110 (10, 10, 9) bt Mitra 110 (10,10,7). Women: Final: Manjudha Soy (JAA) 116 bt Renu Munda (JAA) 104. Third place: Jhanu Hansadh (JAA) 109 bt Niva Kerketta (JAA) 103. Semifinals: Renu 110 bt Jhanu 109; Manjudha 117 bt Niva 99.
