Bangalore: The Union Government is expected to come out with a policy framework shortly to kick-start the nascent semiconductor manufacturing industry in the country on a public-private-partnership basis.

"The Government of India knows its responsibilities. We will do our part to encourage manufacturing," Union Minister of Communication and Information Technology Dayanidhi Maran said at `Vision Summit,' organised by India Semiconductor Association here on Thursday.

Having scored well in Business Process Outsourcing, Information Technology-enabled Services and chip design sectors, time is now ripe for India to move into semiconductor manufacturing to cater to the growth in the industry, which is expected to reach $ 36.3 billion by 2015, he said.

"It has become vital for India to have a manufacturing base. The climate is now good for manufacturing. The domestic mobile industry is booming, and electronic manufacturing service providers such as Sony Ericsson, Elcoteq, Flextronics and Nokia have set up shop in the country, creating the necessary eco system for component manufacturers to start operations", he said.

Apart from chip-making, the next stage is for India to manufacture flat screen display, CD-Rom and DVD-Rom, areas in which we are lacking now, he said.
