BJP seeks steps to check prices

Staff Reporter

Delhiites made to shoulder the burden of increase, says State BJP chief Harsh Vardhan

NEW DELHI: Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party president Harsh Vardhan has called upon the Centre and the Delhi Government to take urgent steps to check the increase in prices of essential commodities.

Stating that at a time when the Centre was busy patting itself on the back for the historic rise of the Sensex, the population of Delhi was shouldering the burden of a hefty increase in the price of food-grains, sugar, milk, fruit and vegetables, Dr. Vardhan said there appeared to be no plan with the Government to curb the trend.

Declaring that despite record production of wheat in the country, the Government was importing five lakh tonnes of wheat, he said the decision clearly indicated that the Government wanted to benefit foreign companies. Also, he warned that the farmers would stand to lose from the move because their procurement price would go down since the arrival of imported wheat about two months from now would clash with the domestic produce hitting the market.

Dr. Vardhan said already with the foreign companies being allowed to directly purchase wheat the price of wheat has gone up to Rs 1,200 per quintal in the open market and the price of ordinary flour stands at Rs. 14 per kg and more today as against Rs 9 per kg till two months ago.

Claiming that there was also a shortage in supply of rice, wheat and kerosene in the fair price shops, the BJP leader charged that the wheat being supplied therein was of a very inferior quality.

Further, he said, with kerosene going out of supply in the fair price shops, over 40 lakh residents -- for whom it is the main fuel for domestic purpose -- had been compelled to spend as much as Rs 25 per litre in the open market.

Finally, the BJP leader said, the latest increase in the price of milk had also hit family budgets. He demanded an immediate rollback of the increase announced by both Mother Dairy and Delhi Milk Scheme.
