Karnataka State Police triumphs

Bangalore: Roshan Madappa struck a brace and more appropriately scored the clincher and helped his team Karnataka State Police (KSP) emerge champion in the Travancore Cup hockey tournament at Canara Bank's expense.

In the final at the KSHA Stadium, KSP trailing 2-3, found a second wind in the last twenty-five minutes to defeat Canara Bank 4-3.

Earlier, the match had a rousing start as both teams matched their skills though it was Canara Bank that caused the first breach. In the seventh minute, K.P. Dinesh latched on to Somanna's pass from the left and scooped one past KSP goalkeeper Arun Babu. The KSP riposte was quick and in the very next minute, Manjunath Jadav's stinger from the centre was deflected in by Roshan Madappa, while Canara Bank custodian G.S. Vivek was caught unawares by the bounce.

Canara Bank again moved ahead, converting its second penalty corner after messing up its first. John Varghese's indirect shot was deftly flicked onto the boards by an unmarked Somanna in the 16th minute. KSP drew level again in the 19th minute as Magesh was obstructed by Vikram Kanth inside the circle. Umpire Hardeep Singh awarded a penalty stroke that stirred up strong protests from the Canara Bank ranks and eventually KSP's Mohan Kumar converted with minimum fuss.

The Bankmen moved ahead again in the 36th minute as Appanna scored off a rebound after Arun Babu failed to smother a K.P. Dinesh shot. Leading 3-2, Canara Bank increased its dominance but more goals proved elusive while KSP captain Laxman Rao was guilty of frittering away a few chances with his penchant for a reverse-hit. A minor scuffle also ensued between the players and KSP's Chetan Kumar suffered the yellow card.

The match again changed course in the 48th minute as Manjunath Jadav scored a stunner for KSP.

The Bankmen never recovered and in the 65th minute, Roshan Madappa tapped in a long shot from Chetan Kumar, positioned in the midfield. Roshan literally cut the ball onto the board, while custodian G.S. Vivek was off balance. The goal sealed Canara Bank's fate and soon the KSP bench was exulting as the final hooter rang.
