BIJAPUR: Nine members of a family, including six children, were killed in an accident on National Highway 13 near Kudagi Cross in Basavanabagewadi taluk of Bijapur district on Saturday. The victims were identified as Dhanibayi Gangu Chavan (60), her son Pomu Gangu Chavan (42), his wife, Seenabayi (35), and their children Rekubayi (18), Rekha (15), Santosh (12), Shilpa (10), Sumitra (8), and Kiran (6). They were from Bhutnal Tanda near Bijapur. While Rekubayi died at the Bijapur Civil Hospital, Shilpa died on the way to hospital. The seven others were killed on the spot.
Collision
The car in which the victims were travelling was involved in a collision with a Bangalore-bound lorry at around 7.30 a.m. The victims were going home after visiting a pilgrimage centre in Koppal. Pomu Gangu Chavan, a driver with a travel agency in Bijapur, was at the wheel at the time of the accident.
Traffic disrupted
The bodies were mutilated. Traffic was disrupted on the highway for over two hours. The lorry driver is yet to be traced. Relatives and villagers broke down as the bodies arrived at Bhutnal Tanda in the afternoon. MLC and KPCC General Secretary Prakash Rathod, Tikota MLA M.B. Patil and Bijapur Zilla Panchayat President Arjun Rathod visited Buthanal Tanda and consoled the relatives.
