NEW DELHI: The Maharashtra Government has agreed to put on hold work on the inter-State Babli reservoir project. An undertaking to this effect was made by Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh at a meeting here on Tuesday with his Andhra Pradesh counterpart Y. S. Rajasekhara Rao in the presence of Union Water Resources Minister Saifuddin Soz. Briefing mediapersons later, Dr. Reddy said: "The Maharashtra Chief Minister has accepted our request to put on hold work on the Babli project till their technical committee is able to convince our technical committee that construction would not adversely affect Andhra Pradesh.'' According to him, the Central Water Commission (CWC) would speak to the technical committees of both States and efforts would be made to wrap up the process of consultations and preparation of the report by May 20 for an early end to the stalemate. Maharashtra re-started work on the project early last month in the wake of a fall in the water level of Godavari.
