Vijayawada
Staff Reporter
VIJAYAWADA: The general body of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) on Saturday approved payment of Rs. 63.34 lakhs to Aarvee Associates, a Hyderabad-based firm, for preparing a comprehensive plan for implementation of underground drainage system in the city under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). The CPI (M) opposed the resolution moved by Congress floor leader K. Rajasekhar for the purpose and also moved an amendment calling for entrusting the task of preparing the plan to VMC's engineers. CPI (M) deputy floor leader D. Kashinadh maintained that the payment to an outside consultant was a waste of money. The resolution was defeated with only seven votes polling in its favour. Defending hiring of the consultant, Mr. Rajasekhar said that a separate allocation had been made in the JNNURM for payment to consultants for preparation of comprehensive reports. Moreover, the engineering staff of VMC did not have the expertise to prepare such reports. CPI floor leader P. Gowtham Reddy endorsed the resolution but cautioned against hiring immature consultants who prepared ineffective plans.
