High Court grants bail to Royapuram Mano

Special Correspondent

The bail order will take effect only on Monday

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has ordered the release of Royapuram Mano on bail, who is in custody since April 17 in connection with the recent violent incidents on the Sathyamurthy Bhavan premises here.

Justice K.N. Basha, who granted bail to the Congress candidate for the R.K. Nagar constituency on Friday, directed him to sign before the Anna Salai police twice a day. However, since Mr. Mano's police custody came to a close only at 5.30 p.m. on Friday, the bail order will take effect only on Monday.

Mr. Justice Basha passed the order after pointing out that all the injured persons had been discharged from hospital and that the statements of witnesses recorded. He stipulated that Mr. Mano should not give public speeches regarding the case and must fully cooperate with the investigating agency as and when required. Earlier, Mr. Mano's counsel submitted that he needed to be released immediately, as he had to campaign for the polls.
