A study by the traffic police has identified 41 spots in the city where accidents take place frequently. Ennore Express Road Masthan Koil on the route from Ennore to Tollgate; Muthusamy Road near Fort railway station; Erukkancheri High Road at Sharma Nagar and Ramalingam temple on the Erukkancheri High Road; Vadakarai junction and Tiruvallur Koot Road on GNT Road are some of the spots in north Chennai. Naduvankarai Bridge on Poonamallee High Road, Vinayagapuram on 100-ft road, Thadhankuppam on 200-ft road, the junction of 19th Main Road and 100 ft Road, SAF Games Village on 100-ft Road, Nerkundram junction on NH4, Kattuppakkam on Mount Poonamallee Road, Thirumazhisai on NH4, the junction of Maduravoyal By-pass Road and NH4 and C.T.H. Road near TI Diamond factory are some of the places in the Central Chennai police zone, and Taramani Link Road near MRTS, the junction of CIT 1st Main Road and Alwarpet signal, Arunachalam Road junction on Arcot Road, Poultry Farm on Anna Salai, Kottivakkam, Neelankarai and Vettuvankeni on ECR, Thoraippakkam on Old Mahabalipuram Road are some of the places identified in South Chennai. To reduce accidents in these areas, traffic police are putting up signboards, reflective drums, studs and flexible stems besides creating rubberised road markings in red. The reflective materials will act as a warning signal for road users. Police have fixed reflector cone-shaped dividers and semi-circular drums in more than 20 places. Soon these materials would be fixed in other places too, said a senior police officer. Apart from putting up reflective road signs, additional men would be posted at the accident-prone areas. The police held meeting Metropolitan Transport Corporation officials and members of the Lorry Owner's Association on ways to combat the rising accident rate, especially involving heavy vehicles, and initiation of more stringent action against violators.
