Service tax

Chennai: BSNL Chennai Telephones has begun levying new enhanced rate of service tax on its range of products, including landline, post and pre-paid mobile telephony, recharge coupons, the ITC calling cards and Sancharnet cards, from Tuesday.

"As per the Finance Act 2006 the service tax will be levied at the rate of 12.24 per cent," which is inclusive of the education cess of 0.24 per cent from April 18, according to a press release.

Prior to the budget announcement, the rate of service tax was 10 per cent, on which a 2 per cent education cess was applicable.

Free yoga classes

for women

Gurukulam Coaching Centre, in association with Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram, is conducting free yoga classes for women.

More than 60 teachers of Valluvar Gurukulam School are learning Yoga to train students at Tambaram.

The teachers who have learnt yoga, propose to train the first generation students of the school.

Gurukulam is also conducting communication skill, spoken English, volleyball, cricket and tennis coaching for children.

Summer camp

for children

Sify I-way and the Krida Foundation are organising a summer camp for children in the age group of five to 15 years.

CDs for entrance examinations

Ink factory

gutted in Padi

A printing ink factory in Padi was gutted in fire here on Friday evening.

No casualty or injury was reported. Fire and rescue personnel, led by the district fire officer, Jeevanandam, put the fire out in an hour, said fire service personnel.
