India terms LTTE attack a brazen act of terrorism

Diplomatic Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday described the suicide attack on the Sri Lankan Army Commander Sarath Fonseka in Colombo as a "brazen act of terrorism."

Mr. Mukherjee, who is deputising for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, spoke to Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse and conveyed India's shock at the attack.

During the conversation, the Minister reiterated India's conviction that violence was not the answer to any problem and political dialogue remained the only way to resolving outstanding issues.

"He [Mr. Mukherjee] expressed India's solidarity with the Government and people of Sri Lanka in this difficult hour. The Sri Lankan President appreciated India's gesture and thanked India for the support and solidarity shown," an External Affairs Ministry release said.
