Call for a Centre-friendly State Government

Staff Reporter

TIRUNELEVELI: The Union Finance Minister, P. Chidambaram, has appealed to the voters to elect a State Government, which would cooperate with the Centre to get maximum benefits for the people of Tamil Nadu.

Addressing a meeting at Tenkasi on Tuesday, he said Tamil Nadu could not get the entire benefit from the Centre even after the United Progressive Alliance government was formed, as the present administration in the State refused to cooperate with the Centre. If the people of Tamil Nadu removed the present regime and elect the new government, which could work together with the Centre, the State would be benefitted.

While criticising the State Government for not sending a draft plan for the proposed desalination plant to provide drinking water for Chennai even after the Centre had allocated Rs. 1,000 crore, he charged that the Tamil Nadu Government had frozen the Special Economic Zone plan at Nanguneri, where the previous DMK regime had intended to establish a hi-tech park.

Mr. Chidambaram said the DMK's promise to give one kg of rice for Rs. 2 and distributing two acres of land to landless farmers and farm labourers were "feasible."

He addressed meetings at Kadayanallur and Veeravanallur under Cheranmahadevi constituency.
