POLLACHI: The University Grants Commission has sanctioned Rs.70,000 to the Department of History of NGM College, Pollachi, for conducting a two-day national-level seminar on `Perspectives of Indian Tourism Industry' on third week of August. According to its principal N. Rajakumar, tourism can enhance socio-economic development, environmental protection and cultural harmony. The total spin over from the employment opportunities arising out of tourism and related industries is estimated to be around 20 million. Recently Union Government has adopted multi-pronged approach for the promotion of tourism.
Nationwide campaign
A nationwide campaign has been accelerated for creating awareness regarding the effects of tourism on economy and the need to preserve the rich heritage and culture. The proposed seminar will act as a pathfinder for the exchange of knowledge and ideas among the academicians, researchers and experts from different parts of the country for the development of tourism industry in the country, he said. The organising secretary of the seminar R. Muthukumaran said that tourism has been incorporated in the curriculum.
Survey
He further said that the World Tourism Organisation survey indicates that the tourists from all over the globe have started patronising East Asia, the pacific West Asia and South Asia, although Europe and America still remain as the renowned tourists destinations, accounting 77 per cent of the total global market.
Multi-destination country
In Asia, China is being flocked by world tourists and is estimated to become the world's top tourist destination by 2020. The World Travel and Tourism Council has identified India as a multi-destination country and hence one of the world's foremost tourist growth centre in the coming decade, he added
