Corrections and Clarifications

A reader points out that in the lead story on the moon mission (May 10, 2006, page 1), the spelling of Moon Minerology Mapper (M3) is incorrect. (The error was in the earlier editions/internet edition). It is Moon Mineralogy Mapper, he says. Mineralogy is an earth science focussed around the chemistry, crystal structure, and physical (including optical) properties of minerals. Studies also include the processes of mineral creation and destruction. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory-California Institute of Technology website says: "The Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3) is a state-of-the-art imaging spectrometer that will provide the first high-resolution spatial and spectral map of the entire lunar surface, revealing the minerals of which it is made. This information will both provide clues to the early development of the solar system and guide future astronauts to stores of precious resources."

In "Amulya Reddy, pioneer of appropriate technology, passes away" (May 8, 2006), there were two references to Dr. Amulya K.N. Reddy having retired from the "Institute", in 1991 and 2000. In the first instance, Dr. Reddy retired from the Indian Institute of Science in 1991, while in the second instance, he retired from the International Energy Initiative in 2000.
