Corrections and clarifications

  • In "Special squad was assigned to watch building" (June 2, 2006), a report on how the Maharashtra police had credible information for almost a year that there would be an attack on the RSS headquarters, the sentences were: "The number plate on the car, MH20B8979 was apparently false, as the police had found another number plate inside. To trace the origins of the car, the police had sent out the chassis number of the engine." A reader says it should have been: "... the police had sent out the chassis and engine numbers", since one refers to the unique number of the body and the other the engine.

  • The chief of the Royal Navy, Admiral Sir Jonathan Band, was incorrectly referred to as Sir Band (10 times) in the text of the report "India, U.K. to hold more naval exercises" (June 2, 2006). It should have been Sir Jonathan. When a person is knighted, the reference should be made to the given name and not the surname.

  • The report "Combat corruption to improve quality of life, says Rangarajan" (June 2, 2006) quoted him as saying a two-fold strategy was needed to contain corruption. "First, the opportunities for corruption must be reduced and it can happen as the country carried forward economic reforms and reduced a form of controls, which resulted in rent-seeking opportunities." A reader asked what was the second, which was missing from the report. The omitted part read: "As scarcity of supply goods and services is replaced by greater abundance, the pervasive nature of corruption that we see in our country can be restricted. Reforms and growth can go hand in hand in reducing opportunities for corruption."

  • With reference to the news item "Civil supplies official trapped" (Andhra Pradesh, May 31, 2006, page 4), a reader says the headline is misleading. He points out that it was a case of disproportionate assets and only a search operation. Assets cases are different from trap cases. In assets cases, the investigating officer must give a fair opportunity to the accused official to explain the assets before prosecuting him. In trap cases there is virtually a trap; the official is caught red handed.

  • A reader says that in the Rohit Brijnath column "Time Ronaldinho grasped his moment" ("Sport", June 1, 2006), the first line in the second paragraph was that the (iconic) picture of Maradona was taken in the 1982 World Cup where six Belgians surround him. It should have been 1986, where Maradona tore apart the Belgians with two superb goals, including a solo where he mesmerised six Belgian defenders, he says. The Sports Desk clarifies: "The writer (Brijnath) is right. Although Maradona became a legend after the 1986 event, the picture Rohit Brijnath was referring to was from 1982."

  • What is the expansion of TRDW and TRDO, asks a reader, referring to the column "TRDW — the way to go", by Makarand Waingankar ("Sport", May 30, 2006). TRDW is the Talent Resource Development Wing of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), while TRDO is Talent Resource Development Officer.

  • With reference to the answer to the first question in "Question Corner — Blood group incompatibility" ("Science & Technology/Agriculture", June 1, 2006), Dr. Saranya Nandakumar clarifies that "Acute transfusion hemolytic reaction (ATHR)", should read as "Acute hemolytic transfusion reaction (AHTR)".
