COIMBATORE: A month-long career guidance exhibition is on at all the District Employment Offices in Coimbatore Region. Regional Deputy Director A. Latha said all the seven offices in the region (Coimbatore, Salem, Erode, Namakkal, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri and the Nilgiris) had d d<149>isplayed information on the higher education courses and scholarships.
Coaching
"Usually, students ask neighbours and friends what courses they should take up. Each candidate have an interest or talent in a particular field. They should have the knowledge of the courses and scholarships available to choose the subject of their interest." The exchanges had collected information on colleges, courses in polytechnics, training programmes, industrial training institutes and employment trends. It also offered coaching for entrance examinations. These were displayed for the benefit of the candidates. If they wanted more details, they could contact the exchange officers. "This is another face of the exchange - imparting vocational guidance," she said. The information was available at the exchanges at any point of time.
Awareness
The exhibition would create awareness among students that it offered such information for their benefit. It was useful especially for students in districts such as Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri, she added. And, about 1,000 candidates had been visiting these exhibitions in places such as Coimbatore and Salem. In these districts, the special officers of Youth Employment Services visited at least five institutes every month to explain to students the various employment opportunities.
Registration renewal
Ms. Latha said that those who had not applied for renewal of their registration at the exchange in 2005 could bring a photocopy of their identity card before September 1 and get the registration renewed.
