COIMBATORE: Nearly 1,000 children from various schools in and around Coimbatore gathered at the Red Cross Building here on Tuesday shouting slogans and holding banners stressing the importance of education. They were participating in a school enrolment rally organised by the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA).

Member of Legislative Assembly Pongalur N. Palanisamy, Coimbatore District Collector Neeraj Mittal and Chief Education Officer flagged off the rally, which culminated at VOC Park.

The enrolment drive was held to sensitise children and parents especially on the need for education, said Mr. P.A<149> Naresh. As it was the beginning of the academic year, it was the best time to spread awareness on education, he added. Identifying dropouts and motivating them to join regular schools was one of the main aims of the rally. Achieving 100 per cent enrolments<149> this year was another of its objectives<149>.

Students from over 15 schools, including NSS volunteers, participated in the procession, holding placards carrying messages such as "provide education for all," "nation's growth depends on its educated youth," and "children should spend their childhood on studies and not on work."

Volunteers and resource teachers of the SSA would conduct enrolment drives in Periyanaickenpalayam, Thondamuthur and S.S Kulam, apart from the city. Through songs, drama and short speeches, they would spread the message of importance of education.
