CHENNAI: Chandrasekarendra Saraswathi of the Kanchi Math combined the roles of the `guru' (spiritual leader), `gnani' (philosopher) and `madathipathi' (administrative head of a religious institution), Jayendra Saraswathi, head of the Math, said on Sunday.

While some were known as great `gurus', some others were good only at running religious institutions. Not all could perform all the functions effectively, Jayendra Saraswathi said, participating in the 113th Jayanthi celebration of the late Chandrasekarendra Saraswathi organised here by the Sri Kanchi Mahaswami Peetarohana Shatabdi Mahotsav Trust.

The pontiff of the Kanchi Math, who earlier declared open an exhibition on his predecessor, said Chandrasekarendra Saraswathi had a deep knowledge of music. To pay homage to him, the Math had set up an organisation to celebrate the birth anniversaries of the trinity of Carnatic music and undertake repairs of the houses of the three legends. A scheme had been drawn up to support Veda Patasalas.

He honoured 113 musicians, `harikatha' exponents, Tamil scholars and Sanskrit students. He also released two compact discs containing a musical tribute to Chandrasekarendra Saraswathi, and a publication.
