CHENNAI: All India State Government Employees' Federation general secretary Sukomal Sen says knowledge about the history and growth of trade union movement in the country is important for those planning to associate themselves with the movement, especially the younger generation. "The new generation should know what they are inheriting ... what their forefathers did," he said at a meeting organised here on Sunday by the Tamil Nadu Government Employees' Association to release the Tamil version of his book `Working Class of India (History of Emergence and Movement).' The book, originally written in Bengali and published thirty years ago in English, had been published in several other Indian languages including Telugu, Malayalam and Marathi. It traces the trade union movement in the country from 1830 to 1990. The Tamil version provides a view into the movement up to 1995.

MP and Labour Progressive Front president C. Kuppusamy, Centre of Indian Trade Unions general secretary A. Soundarajan, and CITU Assistant general secretary K. Palanivel highlighted the importance of the book. All India Trade Union Congress general secretary S.S. Thyagarajan released the publication.
