Kozhikode: The Kozhikode District and Sessions Court on Monday sentenced a youth to eight years rigorous imprisonment and penalty of Rs.50,000 on the charge of raping a woman six years ago. Delivering the judgment, Sessions Court Judge Thomas P. Joseph found D. Biju, 33, hailing from Cheruppu in Mavoor grama panchayat, guilty under Section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The accused was also ordered to pay an amount of Rs.50,000 to the victim, failing which he would have to undergo another two years in prison. However, the prosecution was unable to prove the charge sheet framed against him under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC. According to the charge sheet, Biju who was married and had two children abducted the victim and lived with her for one-and-a-half months in Kollam district. The mother of the victim had lodged a case of her daughter missing with the Mavoor police station. As many as 15 witnesses were examined by the court.
