Timber traders, nature lovers trade charges

Special Correspondent

KOZHIKODE: Timber merchants and nature - lovers are headed for a conflict in Kallai. While the Kallai river Protection Committee has opposed "encroachments and unauthorised structures" on banks of the river, the Kallai Timber Trade Protection Committee has demanded measures to carry on their business from their present premises.

The river protection committee came out with a statement opposing the timber merchants soon after the latter held a convention to appeal to the Revenue department to "stop harassment."

At the meeting, P.M.A. Salam, MLA, had promised to take up the timber merchants' demands with the Revenue Minister.

Faizal Pallikandi, secretary of Kallai River Protection Committee, said on Monday that the committee would stoutly resist attempts "of timber merchants to make encroachments into the river with the support of a group of officials".

The river protection committee has called a convention of Nature-lovers on June 26 to "protest against moves to trespass into the river"

He alleged that attempts were being made to claim title deed on land that was given on lease to timber merchants on the banks of the Kallai to do business.

He said it was necessary to protect the river since it was the lone conduit for rainwater from city and its suburbs to drain out into the Arabian sea.
