Four DYFI activists held on assault charge

Accused of attacking Youth Congress workers at Vengalam

Kozhikode: The Koilandy police have arrested four activists of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) in connection with the assault on five Youth Congress demonstrators during the inaugural ceremony of the Vengalam road over bridge last week.

The arrested persons, N.T. Shiju (25), S. Siby (29), Vikas Babu (42) and P.K. Hraidasan, 41, were charged under Sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (rioting), 148 (armed with weapons), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 324 (causing hurt by dangerous weapons) read with 149 (unlawful assembly with common object) of the Indian Penal Code.

All of them have been released on bail, Koilandy Sub Inspector A. Umesh said.

Complaint

Last week, the police registered a case against 50 identifiable persons in connection with the incident. The case was registered based on a complaint by Youth Congress State vice-president T. Siddique that CPI(M) and DYFI workers assembled at Vengalam had assaulted them including him while taking out a peaceful protest march demanding the ouster of Minister for Public Works P.J. Joseph.

The five Youth Congress activists who waved black flags at the Minister were also charged with Section 147, 143 and 149 of the IPC and Section 2 of the Prevention of Disruption of Public Meeting Act.

All five, Mr. Siddique, district vice-president Ramesh Nambiyath, district secretaries K. Jayaprakash and Sajir Arafath and Kozhikode Assembly constituency president K.P. Nitesh were beaten up by a mob for trying to disrupt the inaugural ceremony of the road over bridge at Vengalam.

The police posted on duty at the function took the injured activists to Koilandy Taluk Hospital. They were later shifted to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital.
