Kozhikode: The Calicut Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) has urged Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac to constitute a Malabar Development Committee and allocate funds for its functioning in the revised budget for 2006-2007. A delegation of the CCCI, led by its president C.E. Chakkuny, which met Mr. Isaac in the State capital last week in connection with a pre-Budget discussion, also requested him to allot sufficient funds for the development of Information Technology (IT) sector in North Kerala. Comprehensive restructuring of the Kerala Value Added Tax (VAT) Act and reduction in sales tax were some of the demands put forth by the delegates. The team, including senior member K. Mohankumar, also wanted the State Government to form an Advisory Committee on the lines of the Customs and Central Excise, a district help centre and grievance cell. Mr. Chakkunny said that the Minister had assured the delegates that Malabar would be given due recognition regarding development activities, would include more members from North Kerala in the VAT Monitoring Committee and would also raise the issue of reducing the Central Sales Tax by two per cent in the Empower Committee. Department of Commercial Taxes Commissioner Paul Antony, Taxes Secretary Marapandian, Finance Secretary K. Jose Cyriac, Expenditure Secretary Ishita Roy, Additional Private Secretary K.P. Narayanan and other officials participated in the meeting.
