Burglars strike near Tambaram
Staff Reporter
TAMBARAM:
Gold jewels weighing 20 sovereigns and Rs. 50,000 cash were stolen from a house in Dhanalakshmi Nagar near Tambaram on Wednesday. The burglary came to light when one of the residents returned home late at night.
E. William, a medical college professor and former Government Hospital Dean, had gone to Tiruchi with his wife to attend a marriage. His son, a software engineer at TIDEL Park, was also away at work, when the burglars broke in. The software engineer returned home around 11 p.m. and noticed a window grille at the back of the house removed. He then discovered the almirah had been broken open and valuables missing. Residents of Dhanalakshmi Nagar said the dense growth of vegetation in the area facilitated the crime. Anti-social elements also took advantage of this to pursue illegal activities, they said. They said several cases of burglary had been reported in the past few months.
Four months ago, a house on the same street was burgled and Rs. 50,000 cash stolen. Police patrolling was inadequate, residents complained, calling for improved security and clearing of the dense outgrowth in the locality.
